In this charming, compelling, and ultimately joyful book, Oxenhandler records a journey that is at once comic and poignant, light and dark, earthy and spiritual. Along the way she wonders: Does wishing have power? Is there danger in wishing? Are some wishes more worthy than others? And what about the ancient link between suffering and desire? To answer her questions, she delves into the history of wishing, from the rain dance and deer song of primeval magic to modern beliefs about mind over matter, prosperity consciousness, and the law of attraction.
“In a charmingly self-deprecating and anecdotal mix of the everyday ups-and-downs of a postdivorce recalibration and profound questions of purpose and desire, Oxenhandler offers a stimulating take on the mysterious workings of the universe. This just may hit it big like Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love.”
Booklist, starred review
“A smart read. . . .readers will enjoy watching Oxenhandler realize her dreams through diligence, hard work and a ‘willing suspension of disbelief’ in the captivating magic of wishing.”Publishers Weekly
“An endearing combination of meticulous research and winsome enthusiasm.”Kirkus Reviews

From
the preface:
Our
desire in writing this book is to bring forth a more complete
vision of death. It is time to invite death out of the shadows
of the underworld into the sunlight of our lives, to open death's
door and replace fear and denial with joy and freedom.
There is a renaissance under way. In the last
twenty or so years, across our nation, self-reliant and creative
people have handcrafted their own wedding ceremonies, taken control
of how and where their children were birthed, and are now redefining
death and dying.
We hope to inspire and encourage more of you
so that we are not just isolated pockets of people celebrating
life/death, but are part of a greater spiritual awakening. One
of the consequences of our modern, technological age is that we
have become isolated from each other, from life and from death.
The choice is oursto remain disconnected onlookers or to
seize the opportunity to become active advocates for more compassion
and meaning in our lives. . .
