I am looking forward to a return to the Villette in Soreze with memories of an idyllic artistic vacation there seven years ago. I particularly love to do quick capture pen and watercolor sketches because there is so much to enjoy both in Soreze and the surrounding areas. To get an idea of what I have in mind for this stay you can view my sketchbook from that last visit and see the demonstration videos, and recently putlished book on art journaling at my site here http://h2ocolors.com/galleries/sketchbook/travel/france/france.html

Suzy Spafford - SOLD OUT

  • Session Four 6/21 - 6/29

  • Session Five 6/28 - 7/6

Hello Art Friends,

Carole and Don Watanabe’s sweet home in France was a haven of inspiration for me on three separate trips I have made over the past 10 years with many art friends.entrancetosoreze I painted my heart out in its charming cobblestone lanes and surrounding countryside. My career’s work for over 40 years has been, and still is, creating the characters and doing the art of Suzy’s Zoo. While I love what I do, my first passion was as a serious watercolorist.

Attached are a few images of watercolors I painted in Soreze. My work is done mostly en plein aire so that I can capture its true colors and values. The Suzy’s Zoo art is done in marker art which is also a transparent medium. Some of the illustrations are also done in traditional watercolor, specifically children’s books, and occasional greeting card images where a more thoughtful tone was needed.

I work in the traditional style that I learned from my high school art teacher J. Milford Ellison, who also studied under Milford Zornes and Millard Sheets. The approach is clean, direct, spontaneous, and representational. My favorite watercolorist is Winslow Homer for his incredible vitality and strength with the brush, but I also love the works of Frederick Whitaker, Eileen Monahan, Rex Brandt, Millard Sheets, and Milford Zornes. If I had dedicated my career to watercolor instead of Suzy’s Zoo, ….well, there would be no Suzy’s Zoo. I had to make hayfieldsa choice where to put my greatest energy. I had too good of a deal in how I started that business, so I sacrificed working toward a serious watercolor career in order to focus on building the greeting card brand. I have continued to paint for pleasure over the years, and have sold many paintings via word-of-mouth. The images attached were also released through my greeting card line, and have reached many people who follow my other work. In illustrating the characters in their settings, I apply many of the techniques of transparent watercolor as well as the imagery I have in the back of my head from painting on-the-spot, so I am never that far away from the painter I started out to be.

I will be happy to show you how I paint. I use Arches 300 lb. rag watercolor paper. My palette consists of 4 reds, 3 blues, one green, two browns, and three antiquegardenchair yellows: Alizarin crimson; Cadmium red light; Rose Madder Genuine; Light red (it looks like a brick red); Pthalo Blue; Ultramarine blue; Cobalt Blue; Pthalo green; Aureolin yellow; Cadmium yellow med.; Raw sienna (it’s a deep yellow); and Burnt Sienna and Burnt Umber. Sometimes I incude Yellow Ochre and Cerulean blue. My essential brushes are a 1” flat Aquarelle, a #12 round, a ¼” flat, and one #4 round with long bristles for small detail and texture. I usually work standing up and have a special watercolor easel.

It will be wonderful to be there again and live the life of an artist in France. Besides Soreze, the little towns nearby provide much subject matter, interest and charm. I am sure you will find inspiration every place you look. But especially, being with other creative people is refreshing to the soul, so I look forward with great pleabarrysgardensure to being your hostess and artist-in-residence.

Artfully yours,

Suzy Spafford

Aondrea Maynard

  • Session Six 7/5 - 7/14

  • Session Seven 7/12 - 7/20

aomaygrace

Aondrea Maynard is an artist who was born under a full moon and grew up close to the countryside where her intimate relationship with Nature began ~ her happiest moments being spent eating fruit and reading books in the branches of trees and playing along the river beds. She has been creating art as long as she can remember. Eager to explore the world beyond she moved to San Francisco, traveled through Asia and Europe and spent time living in Paris, France immersing herself in the depth of beauty, culture and layers and layers of time she encountered there and of course she painted her heart out.

Although Aondrea studied painting, sculpture, art history, and textile design she primarily considers herself to be a self taught artist who has let the creative curiosities take her where they will. Her work is a visual exploration of our relationship with the natural world, color studies as atmospheric & emotional experiences, explorations of the seductive quality of light and the mysterious intrigue of shadow; all narratives of our own inner journeys that speak of seasons, searchings, unspoken wisdom, and life’s grace.

Aondrea’s various works includes watercolor, collage, acrylic and oil painting. She currently lives and paints in San Francisco and teaches collage workshops to other inspiring creatives. Her work is exhibited in galleries across the country and collections worldwide.

It is her delight to be hosting the Artist Retreat July 5th – 14th and 12th – 20th in this charming little medieval town and looks forward to cultivating a space that nurtures and inspires the blossoming artistry of the guests that will be joining her for this delicious venture!

Susan Greer

  • Session Eight 7/19 - 7/27

I'm passionate about Plein Air Painting and can't wait to paint the sunflower fields and old world charm in and around Soreze next summer with you. I'll be there for Sessions 8 & 9 -- the last two weeks in July -- and am looking forward to all of us exploring & painting the magic that defines Soreze together.

As a bit of background, I've been fortunate enough to paint with some of the great modern plein air masters, including Wolf Kahn, Ken Auster, Tim Horn, Skip Whitcomb, Randall Sexton, Camille Przewodek, Stanley Goldstein, & Kim Lordier. I am also a member of Oil Painters of America, as well as local Sonoma County Arts Councils. You can find my paintings on exhibit at the Backstreet Gallery in the Arts District of Santa Rosa (ongoing), the Sonoma County Arts Council Gallery (September), Graton Gallery (October), and ARTrails Open Studios (October).
